What is a Kilt Used For?

by | Jan 18, 2024 | All About Kilts, Categorized

Clothes serve both practical and cultural purposes throughout most of human history. They began as a means of protection from the elements, but they eventually evolved to also become the means to reflect our personal style and identity.

What is a Kilt Used For by Ozkilts It may now not be so prevalent these days, but there are individuals who dress to project their social status. At Ozkilts, we think it’s more that these individuals have impeccable taste, and know how to project and express themselves, through their clothes.

If there is one particular garment that can embody a special significance of a piece of clothing, it is the kilt. The kilt plays a prominent role in various cultures, most notably in Scotland and Ireland.

The Scottish kilt’s history goes all the way back to the 16th century. It is important to note, however, that kilts are not only traditionally associated with Scotland, but also play a long-established role in Irish culture. However, the Irish today wear their kilts, largely restricted to weddings and formal events.

Traditional kilts are worn as a symbol of pride and a celebration of Celtic heritage, yet each kilt wearing country has bits of differences, which we will explore more below. Like with all forms of fashion, kilts have evolved. Designers introduced new design ideas and contemporary twists to the traditional kilt, thus the utility kilt was born.

It can’t be argued that both traditional and utility kilts are unique garments that have captivated people the world over. Traditional kilts embody a rich cultural heritage, whereas its recent counterpart, the utility kilt, has been adapted to the evolving needs of modern fashion, functionality and style.

What is a Kilt?

Dating back as early as the 16th century, the kilt we know of today was called a Feileadh Mor (big wrap). It was a long and thick stretch of fabric that was used to drape over the wearer’s shoulder that also functioned as a kilt.

The Feileadh Mor was used as a protective piece of clothing designed to shield the wearer from the fierce Scottish weather. In these outfits, fabric is folded to create loose pleats, then fastened and secured by a thick leather belt around the waist.

By the middle of the 17th century, the Feileadh Mor was replaced by the Feileadh Beag. It consisted of only the lower half of the Feileadh Mor that’s shorter, loosely folded, and wrapped around the waist and again secured by a thick belt.

The 18th century brought about the next evolution of the Feileadh Beag by sewing in the pleats to the fabric and incorporating buckling. This made the outfit much easier to wear and gave us something closer to the kilt we know of and recognise today.

It was only in the early 19th century that they became the iconic symbol of Scottish identity and as the traditional Scottish dress.

Both the Scottish and Irish kilts differ the most with its origins and meaning. For the Scots, each family or clan has their own tartan, distinguished by their surname. On the other hand, Irish Tartans were designed to represent the districts and counties of Ireland.

Today, both Scottish and Irish kilts are similar in style and appearance. The traditional Scottish kilt consists of a pleated knee-length tartan fabric adorned with patterns that represent a family or clan.

Regardless of its origins, today’s kilts are colourful, exotic, stylish, and just plain cool. However, cool as they can be, you won’t see a traditional kilt being worn on a daily basis except for festive occasions and/or holidays.

There was a need for a type of kilt one can wear anywhere and anytime.

What is a Utility Kilt?

Utility kilts are the more modern adaptation of the traditional Scottish Kilt. They are designed to be more robust to withstand everyday use. But before we delve in deeper on what a utility kilt is, we have to share that utility kilts, such as those from Ozkilts, are not burdened with history or represent any kilt wearing clan.

Modern utility kilts are an awesome evolution of the time-honoured garment that pays homage to tradition. A utility kilt is designed primarily with versatility and functionality in mind and usually constructed of durable materials such as high-grade cotton, denim, leather, and a host of other materials.

What’s great about utility kilts is that they maintain a traditional structure and design while cleverly incorporating modern design features. Pockets for instance vary from style to style coming from different manufacturers.

Some utility kilts are designed with flapped cargo style pockets on the side, while others come with rear and/or side pockets similar to pants. Still, others come with detachable cargo pockets, like the range of utility kilts we provide at Ozkilts, which when removed helps you create a more traditional looking kilt.

Utility kilts are popular among individuals seeking style, comfort, convenience, and freedom of movement. Modern technology and automation have come a long way that can mass-produce kilts. But we at Ozkilts craft our kilts lovingly and with care by hand.
